Undoubtedly VR is going to be the x-mas present of the year. And I doubt that Oculus Rift or HTC Vive will be the ones in the lead as they are still high in demand and low in production. However, enthusiasts and curious tweens are not going to wait, for either the prices to drop or the production speed to increase.
This means that there is an excellent opening for headset brands which have not yet brainwashed themselves in to our consciousness. If I was such a brand, I'd work swiftly to catch this up and coming market, particularly since many of these brand have larger brands behind them.
Because let's face it, it's the consciousness penetrating brand managing that plays a key role. I play on a Sega Dreamcast, the gaming generation that came after me doesn't even know what that is.
So which VR headset brands are likely to end up being just as obvious as a HTC Vive or an Oculus?
So those are three potential contenders to join the big leagues, but why does the title state "game of phones"?
The smartest strategy is adapted by OnePlus Loop VR. Recently they announced that they would be giving away 30 000 samples of OnePlus Loop VR headsets, which are compatible with the OnePlus phones and other smartphones its size. They ran out of stock immediately, and are now going to either make or break once word of mouth starts spreading. Not only are they going to grow in a new market, but only providing a simple headset, gives them the opertunity to grow as a brand and become affordable to consumers who are not as tech saavy, until the day they drop a more extensive VR headset. So I predict that OnePlus Loop VR is going to be the thing under most x-mas trees this year.
What the actual future entails? We'll just have to wait and see in 3D..
